‘Extremely creepy and disgusting’

A man is wanted by police for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman at a bar in St Kilda on Saturday night.

The woman, who did not want to be named, said it happened as she was holding her boyfriend’s hand as they left the venue.

“Someone grabbed me and pretty much lifted up my skirt and did something that was extremely creepy and disgusting,” she said.

“And I just remember getting extremely angry and scared and running off out of the venue.”

The woman said she didn’t get a look at the man and doesn’t remember seeing him in the packed venue beforehand.

“I just froze,” she said.

The woman said the assault had left her feeling anxious and nervous and she was having trouble focusing and concentrating.

“I’ve got three girls and it’s sort of interfered with my relationship with them,” she said, breaking down into tears.

“I’m very passionate about women’s rights and I feel that I should be able to go out and any other women should be able to go out and not have this done to them.”

The man was last seen almost an hour later leaving the venue with another man, walking south-east along Acland Street, towards Elwood.

Police say the suspect is believed to be aged between 30 and 50, has black hair, an olive complexion and a medium build.

He was wearing a white shirt, black jeans and brown shoes.

Victoria Police detective Simon Garner said he believed the men went to the club with the aim of sexually assaulting women and the man took his opportunity when the woman walked past him.

“It appears they have entered with the purpose to look for women,” he said.

“From the CCTV footage that we’ve obtained, they don’t seem to be approaching the bars or anything like that. They just appear to be hanging around in crowded areas and approaching women.”

According to police, the second man is believed to be aged between 30 and 40, has a slim build and was wearing black shoes and a blue shirt with a white collar.

Police are looking into whether the man is also suspected in other sexual assault cases.

Police investigators have released CCTV footage and images of the men they believe can assist them with their enquiries.

Anyone who has information about the incident or the man’s identity is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
